On March 29, 1999, permission to occupy was granted and on May 26, 1999, South Charleston Unity Apartments was dedicated to Mr. Joseph W. Powell in a formal ceremony and open house. This Section 202 housing facility serves the elderly population and was completed at a total cost of 3.0 million dollars.
This 43-unit apartment complex contains a multi-purpose room with kitchen, laundromat, an activity room on the second and third floors, and an apartment for the Resident Manager. The location is ideal in regard to accessibility to transportation, shopping, and health care. An active Tenants Association sponsors yard and hot dog sales, dinners, bingo, and holiday parties. “Get-Well” cards are sent to ill residents and flowers are delivered to funeral homes. Covered-dish dinners and blood pressure testing are scheduled monthly. Management and residents are trained to "shelter in place" in case of a chemical emergency and received certification for this training. Emergency alarms are installed on all fire doors and security cameras are located throughout the property. A 12-passenger bus has been purchased for tenant outings and is shared with other Unity sites.
