Chelsea enrolled in the YouthReady program in September 2011. It took her four years to pass all five parts of a combination of GED and TASC to receive her High School Equivalency Diploma, which she received in May. While studying to attain her certificate, Chelsea became employed with Gabriel Brothers in Fairmont to support herself, and her child. At times it was difficult for Chelsea to attend ABE class regularly due to employment and being a single parent. With the assistance of her Instructor and YouthReady staff, she was able to complete her studies and schoolwork from home when unable to attend class. YouthReady staff assisted Chelsea in identifying her goals. Attaining her high school equivalency was her short term goal, and then she wanted to attend college at Fairmont State University to work towards a degree in Social Work. Due to her own personal experiences, Chelsea became interested in social work supporting misunderstood youth, and decided to make it her career. Chelsea participated in a work training experience at the National Youth Advocate office in Fairmont. She completed 365 hours in the positions of Social Work Assistant and Office Helper. Chelsea gained experience doing tasks such as; observing the social worker’s daily activities, meeting with children and foster parents, following up on parents and children, home visits, filing, answering phones, data entry, and assisting with paperwork. Chelsea enjoyed this work experience and deemed it helpful in solidifying her decision to choose a career in Social Work. This summer Chelsea was accepted at Pierpont Community College in Fairmont. After completing 24 hours, she will transfer to Fairmont State University to complete her studies. Chelsea remains employed at Gabriel Brothers while attending classes. She balances being a full-time college student and being a single parent, as well as successful employment. Even with those challenges, Chelsea’s determination, hard work, and drive to succeed prove that she will achieve her goals.
